NEWS FLASH 1 // RDFC Hosts JV Tourney

On Saturday, April 27th, 35 high school students from seven schools and clubs came to Lowell High School for the first tournament hosted by the Red Devil Fencing Club.  Participants fenced in gendered pools (with the exception of epee, which was mixed) and then fenced in direct elimination rounds.  Thank you to Marc Ryser (NIFC), Josh Williams (PFC), Don Yetsko (NIFC), Rich Maro (NIFC), and Dale Block (NIFC) for their assistance in running the tournament and to all of our parent volunteers for making our first tournament such a success.  Congratulations to RDFC medal winners Nick (1st Sabre, 2nd Epee), Sam (2nd Foil, 3rd Epee), and Emily (2nd Sabre)!

NEWS FLASH 2 // Dual Meet with HHS

On Saturday, August 3rd, six RDFC foilists and five RDFC sabreurs participated in a tournament with fencers from Harrison High School in West Lafayette, Indiana and local high school aged fencers from NIFC.  The tournament was hosted by NIFC and run by NIFC coach Marc Ryser and RDFC coach Kendra McPheeters-Neal.  Coaches Bob and Marcia Skurka, Marian Catholic graduate Melen Skurka, and NIFC fencer Don Yetsko helped to make the tournament a success.  Thank you to Anita Schafer, coach of Harrison High School, for bringing her students to fence with us.  Congratulations to medal winners Charlie (NIFC), Jack (HHS), Sarah (HHS), and Sam (NIFC) in foil and Charlie (NIFC), Nick (RDFC), Tyler (RDFC), and Emily (MCHS) in sabre.  We had a great time!

NEWS FLASH 4// RDFC IN THE NEWS

On Monday, October 9, RDFC welcomed NWI Times journalist Melanie Csepiga to view our practice and get to know a little more about Red Devil fencing. Later in October, a videographer and photographer from The Times joined us as well. RDFC is grateful to the three individuals who took time out of their days to watch what we do best.

The article regarding RDFC can be found here and the video here.

Thank you again, NWI Times

NEWS FLASH 5// RDFC at Stevenson

On Saturday, November 16, 2013, RDFC competed in their very first high school tournament in men's foil, men's sabre, women's foil, and women's sabre.  Fifteen members of the club along with team managers and coaches traveled to Lincolnshire, Illinois for the event.

Fencers competed in pools before moving on to their direct elimination bouts.  Kudos to Sam (MF) and Jodie (WS) for winning their first round DEs!

Results can be found here on Ask Fred.

NEWS FLASH 6// RDFC at CMHS

On Saturday, November 23, 2013, RDFC traveled all the way to Waukesha, Wisconsin (with a brief detour through the airport, oops!) to compete at Catholic Memorial High School. RDFC competed in men's foil, men's sabre, women's foil, and women's sabre.

Fencers competed in pools before moving on to their direct elimination bouts.  Congrats to Sam (MF) and Bailey Kien (WF) for winning their first round DEs! The entire team is showing improvement and the coaches are so proud of them!

Results can be found here on Ask Fred.

NEWS FLASH 7// RDFC at New Trier

On Saturday, December 21, 2013, RDFC traveled to New Trier for their junior-varsity team tournament.  In this format, teams of three fencers (with substitutions allowed) fence against each member of another school's team. They fence teams in a pool which seeds them for their place overall.  In the case of not having a clear-cut ranking, teams fence off for places.

RDFC coaches could not be prouder of their fencers! Men's sabre placed 5th out of 9 teams and both men's and women's foil placed 7th out of 11 teams. Given the fact that the majority of these teams are well-established fencing teams with many members who started fencing long before high school, this is a fantastic accomplishment! Women's sabre did not participate in this tournament due to not having the required number of fencers for a team.

NEWS FLASH 8// RDFC at Culver

On Saturday, January 11, RDFC started the new year out right--with fencing! Our fencers braved the snow and traveled to the beautiful campus of Culver Military Academies for the Midwest High School Open. This is by far the most difficult tournament of the season

Despite long odds, our fencers performed well. Kudos to sabre fencers Max and Jodie for near wins in their first DE bouts against much higher seeded fencers--Jodie went 14-15! Also, Coach McPheeters has to give a shoutout to foilists Amber and Nicole who were forced to fence against one another in the first direct elimination round. They kindly reminded their coach not to be upset about their having to fence each other because that meant that one of them would win their first DE. Congratulations to Amber for that accomplishment!

On Saturday, January 18, RDFC traveled to Marian Central Catholic in Woodstock, Illinois for the Great Lakes Junior Varsity Championships and brought home hardware! Our fencers showed great improvement in this last tournament of the travel season (don't worry, there's one more at LMS on February 22).

All of the RDFC coaches were proud of the performance at this tournament. In men's foil, Kyle B won his very first DE by a wide margin (15-6). In men's sabre, Alex won his first DE 15-11 and Forrest, though ultimately losing the bout, showed Coach Bob the best rally this team has seen. In women's foil, Bailey won her first DE 15-8. And finally, men's foilist Sam Kouder brought home the silver medal out of 46 JV men's foilists!

NEWS FLASH 10// RDFC Invitational

On Saturday, February 22, RDFC hosted its second ever tournament--an invitational including high school fencers from Marian Catholic High School, Homewood-Flossmoor (school and home-school teams), Harrison High School, Northwest Indiana Fencing Club, and Tinley Park Fencing Club. The tournament was a huge success with 49 high school fencers participating.

RDFC represented the home team well, with multiple medalists. Forrest and Cameron took first and second in mixed sabre, respectively, and Jodie placed 8th of 12 but was the top female finisher. Sam took second place in men's foil. Way to end the season, team!
